Healing HeArt: Mental Wellness from the Heart, Inspiration Through the Arts

A month-long string of art-related events at the Brick City Center for the Arts that launched October 1st with an exhibition of paintings by novices from 8 to 80 — ranging from abused and emotionally disturbed children, to one-time substance abusers to the elderly suffering from any of the forms of dementia. Their art will be on display all month.

Events later in the month include a Picnic at the Brick, a Paint Out at the Brick to develop ceiling tiles for Munroe Regional Medical Center and adult wellness screenings.

“Art is kind of like a bridge to life for them, a bridge to happiness and success,” says Terrie Hardison, executive director of the area’s Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance for Education & Support, one of the partners in the sponsoring Mental Wellness Coalition.

Clients and patients at the six organizations — the Centers, the Vines Hospital, ADAES, Munroe, National Alliance on Mental Illness and Arnette House — are ponying up some 150 paintings among them for the show. Probably more than half will be displayed at the Brick through Oct. 30.
